 Kyu Shiba Rikyu Onshi Teien（旧芝離宮恩賜庭園） Along with Koishikawa Korakuen, it is one of the early Edo period daimyo gardens remaining in Tokyo today. It is a garden that well expresses the characteristics of a strolling-style pond garden that conveys the tastes of the Edo period with its bold rock arrangements. The layout of the garden around the pond and the placement of the stones are excellent. Land reclaimed from the sea around 1655-1658 was granted to Senior Council Okubo Tadato from the 4th Shogun Ietsuna in 1678. It is said that when Tadato built his residence, he called a gardener from his domain, Odawara, to create the garden. The garden was called 'Rakujuen.' After passing through several owners, the garden became the Shiba residence of the Kishu Tokugawa family around the end of the Edo period. Zojoji Temple, located in the heart of Tokyo and continuing to protect the tombs of the Tokugawa Shoguns, is a place of training as the head temple of the Jodo sect.
