Ikegami Honmonji(池上 本門寺)
🛕
Ikegami Honmonji Temple is a sacred site where Nichiren Shonin passed away on October 13, 1282, at the age of 61.
Nichiren Shonin left Mount Minobu, where he had lived for nine years, on September 8, 1282, to go to Hitachi no Yu for medical treatment. On the way, he died at the residence of Munenaka Ikegami, the lord of Musashi Province Ikegami (present-day Ikegami, Ota-ku, Tokyo).
The name Choeizan Honmonji Temple was given by Nichiren Shonin with the prayer that it would prosper long as a dojo of the Hokke Sutra.
After Nichiren Shonin's death, Munenaka Ikegami, a great patron of the temple, donated about 70,000 tsubo of temple precincts according to the number of letters in the Hokke Sutra (69,384), and the foundation of the temple was built. Since then, it has been called "Ikegami Honmonji Temple".
