Tsukiji Honganji(築地 本願寺)
🛕
Tsukiji Honganji Temple, a temple of the Jodo Shinshu Honganji sect, is located at 3-chome, Tsukiji, Chuo-ku, Tokyo.
It is one of the most representative temples in Tokyo and a direct temple of Nishi Honganji in Kyoto.
The main deity is a standing statue of Amitabha Tathagata, said to have been hand-carved by Prince Shotoku.
It was founded near Asakusa in 1617, but was destroyed by a great fire called the "Meireki no Taika" in 1657.
The land given by the Edo Shogunate for reconstruction was at the current location, but at that time it was at sea. The name "Tsukiji" comes from the fact that the land was reclaimed and the main hall was built.
The main hall was destroyed again in 1923 due to a fire following the Great Kanto Earthquake, but it was rebuilt in 1934 and became the current main hall.
