The foundation of Soto Zen Buddhism lies in Zazen (seated meditation).
It originates from the fact that Buddha practiced Zazen and attained enlightenment.
Zen refers to discerning the true nature and state of things and regulating the workings of the mind to respond correctly to them. By sitting, the body is stabilized, and by concentrating the mind, the harmony of body, breath, and mind is achieved.
The Zazen of the Soto Zen sect is called "Shikantaza," which means to just sit single-mindedly.
Zazen is not a means to achieve some other purpose. The very act of sitting Zazen is the "Buddha's form" and the form of enlightenment.
In everyday life, we tend to be swayed by our selfish desires and the surface of things, but in Zazen, it is essential not to be caught up in various thoughts and desires.
